AI – A Modern Approach
What is AI?
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a technology that enables machines, computers, and software to think, learn, understand, and make decisions like humans.
In simple words:
AI is a technology that allows machines to “think” and “understand” like humans.
History of AI (Timeline)
1. Ancient Times
Greek philosophers like Aristotle imagined the concept of a “thinking machine.”
It was only an idea, not an actual technology.
2. 1940–1950: Foundation of AI
In 1950, Alan Turing published the famous paper “Can Machines Think?”
He introduced the Turing Test to test machine intelligence.
First electronic computers were invented—this gave machines the ability to calculate.
3. 1956: Birth of AI
John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence.”
AI was declared a new scientific field at the Dartmouth Conference.
Early AI programs were built like Logic Theorist and General Problem Solver.
4. 1960–1980: Early Development & AI Winter
Expert Systems such as MYCIN were developed.
Progress slowed due to lack of data and weak computing power.
This period became known as the AI Winter.
5. 1990–2000: Rebirth of AI
Internet growth + fast computers boosted AI research.
In 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov, proving machines could beat humans in logical tasks.
6. 2010 – Present: Modern AI Era
Machine learning and deep learning revolutionized AI.
Today AI is everywhere—ChatGPT, Google Assistant, Tesla self-driving cars, healthcare diagnostics, and more.
How Does AI Work?
AI works by learning from data using machine learning techniques.
Main Steps:-
1. Data Collection – Collecting useful information.
2. Data Processing – Cleaning and organizing the data.
3. Model Training – Teaching the machine using the data.
4. Prediction/Decision – Model gives output or decisions.
Types of AI
1. Narrow AI (Weak AI)
- Works for a specific task only.
- Examples: Siri, Alexa, Google Search, ChatGPT, YouTube recommendations.
2. General AI (Strong AI)
- Human-level intelligence.
- Can perform any task a human can do.(Still under development.)
3. Super Intelligent AI
- More intelligent than humans.
- A future concept that does not yet exist.
